Lama Tsongkapa Day is a celebration of the anniversary of the parinirvana of Lama Tsongkhapa (1357-1419), the founder of the Gelug tradition of Tibetan Buddhism.
“In Gelug regions, Lama Tsongkhapa Day is definitely an important celebration,” shared Joona Repo, translation coordinator for FPMT International Office, “In Lhasa, the Barkhor is packed with people circumambulating the Jokhang.
“In India, people celebrate it too, of course. In Mundgod and Bylakuppe, they light up all the temples and assembly halls with Christmas lights.”
