Importance of the Four Noble Truths

His Holiness says the Buddha started with the four noble truths because within us all there is an instinctive feeling to have happiness and to avoid problems and difficulties. Before we can look at how to fulfill that longing to be happy, we really need to experience whether or not this is so.

We have to experience the truth of this for ourselves – not because it is in the scriptures, not because somebody has told us. This is our starting point. …

About the Series

This year we will be taking a final look at karma and then moving on to the next part of the Stages of the Path to Awakening: the stages of the path in common with the person of middling capacity. That means learning about the four noble truths, samsara, and nirvana, how samsara works, the nature of nirvana, and how to achieve it with the three higher trainings in morality, concentration, and wisdom. We will also be looking at the twelve links of dependent origination.
