Medicine Buddha (Tib.: Sangyae Menlha)
The Medicine Buddha or “great king with the radiance of a lapis jewel” is the embodiment of all the buddha’s healing qualities. The Buddha taught the four Medical tantras in the palace of Tanadukh and since then it has formed the basis for all healing traditions in the Eastern medical traditions. His left hand holds a begging bowl filled with three medical fruits and nectar symbolizing his power to conquer diseases and delusions. His right hand holds the Myrobalane plant renowned as the ‘king of medicine’ because of its effectiveness in treating both mental and physical illnesses. Recitations of his mantra and of his name is said to bring release from suffering, protection from dangers, and untimely death.
It is great chance for students to learn this artistic process and for themselves to receive the healing of the Medicine Buddha. Meditations and mantra sessions will enhance the process. The clean food offered by LMB and its environment will stimulate this process.
Students will receive hands-on tuition in drawing and painting the deity. This course is based on a quick path to create an artwork based on the tradition of painting gold lines on a simple blue background. The painting technique will focus on natural colours and the making of your own gold paint. Not many artists know this secret technique.
Art Supplies
All students will need to purchase and bring their own art supplies. Detailed lists of the requirements will be sent to all those who register. Please budget ~$150 – $300 (depending on the quality of supplies purchased) for anyone who needs to buy all supplies from scratch.
LMB will create the boards that are needed for you to work on – they can be added as an optional extra for anyone who doesn’t have one. You will need to purchase these boards at least 2 weeks in advance so we have time to prepare them.
