an exploration of the Eight Worldly Concerns*
*or Eight Worldy Dharmas
These are worldly concerns that generally motivate the actions of ordinary beings: being happy when given gifts and unhappy when not given them; wanting to be happy and not wanting to be unhappy; wanting praise and not wanting criticism; wanting a good reputation and not wanting a bad reputation. (from Lama Yeshe Wisdom Archive glossary)
Why does your life go up and down all the time? Why so much up and down, it’s because of these things… But when your mind is stabilized and equalized to these concerns, then nothing disturbs your mind, your life is always, always you have inner peace, incredible peace, all the time, day and night. (Lama Zopa Rinpoche, teachings in Guadalajara, Mexico, 2008)
Geshe Sherab will give some open talks on developing a healthy motivation, free of the eight worldly concerns.
