There is no negativity like hatred,
And no fortitude like patience.
Thus I should cultivate patience
Persistently through various ways.*
Whether we are committed to the path of altruism or not, we face many difficulties in life. If we respond to them with anger we only add to our problems and reinforce an emotion that will make even the slightest irritation unbearable. Not only will anger cause us misery, it will also isolate us from friends who can no longer endure our angry outbursts. Further, we will tend to avoid valuable endeavors that would increase our knowledge and abilities simply because we can’t stand the difficulties. We need an antidote to anger. This does not come in the form of a pill; it comes in understanding our own reality and training our mind. Join us while we study the Patience chapter of the *Way of the Bodhisattva by Shantideva, and gain this understanding and tools for pacifying our anger.
