Wednesday, March 18: We’re meeting on Wednesday this week because of students attending the CCARE event with H.H. the Karmapa at Stanford on Tuesday.
In the Fall of 2014, we covered Part One of this topic – the Three Jewels – focusing on chapter one of Sublime Continuum. Now with Part Two, in the Spring of 2015, we begin the essential subject matter of “Why We Have the Potential for Buddhahood.”
The root text for this course, Sublime Continuum (Uttaratantra) explains our potential for enlightenment by way of ten similes:
Just like a buddha in a decaying lotus, honey amidst bees, a grain in its husk, gold in filth, a treasure underground, a shoot and so on sprouting from a little fruit, a statue of the Victorious One in a tattered rag, a ruler of mankind in a destitute woman’s womb, and a precious image under a layer of clay, this buddha element abides within all sentient beings, obscured by the defilement of the adventitious poisons.
Buddha Nature: The Mahayana Uttaratantra Shastra with Commentary,
translated by Rosemarie Fuchs, Snow Lion.
This is a weekly class, on Tuesday nights, 7pm.
Venerable Steve Carlier is the resident monk at Land of Medicine Buddha who teaches the In-Depth programs. He is fluent in Tibetan and often serves as an oral interpreter for visiting Tibetan masters. Venerable Steve was ordained as a Buddhism monk in 1979 and trained in the traditional Tibetan monastic system for over 20 years.
You will receive materials for this course – readings and other assignments – online, either emailed to you or uploaded to a website.
