Program Description:

Our emotions can lead us to our greatest joys and most painful sorrows. At the positive end of the spectrum, they can be a great gift and provide us with a compass. However, most of us also struggle with disturbing emotions. We can get caught by them: lost in the grip of anger, sadness, fear, or overwhelm. This suffering is something we have all felt, but the good news is that there are ways that we can create more space, choice, and ease in the face of it.

In this eight week Sunday evening Zoom class, we will explore the interface between the ideas of modern psychology and the contemplative methods and various approaches Buddhism offers in the context of disturbing emotions. We will debunk some common misperceptions about the Buddhist approach to our emotional lives, and we will aim to gain an easy-to-implement understanding of the synergies between the insights offered by psychological science and those enshrined in the Buddhist tradition. Areas covered will include:

  • Understanding how emotions work, and how they can work for and not against us
  • Recognizing and working with emotional triggers
  • Deepening awareness and stabilizing attention
  • Looking at the definition of disturbing emotions from both the Buddhist and psychological perspectives
  • Applying an understanding of Buddhist philosophical principles to our emotional lives
  • Increasing compassion for the self and others

These sessions will include discourse, discussion, meditation instruction and guided meditation sessions. They are suitable for new students as well as experienced students wishing to deepen their practice. All are welcome. This class is open to all levels of meditation experience.

Venerable Tenzin Chogkyi is a Buddhist monastic who first became interested in meditation and Buddhism in the early 1970s, and became a student of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and other Tibetan Buddhist teachers in early 1991. Venerable Tenzin took novice ordination in 2004 with His Holiness the Dalai Lama and completed several long meditation retreats over a six year period. Venerable Tenzin teaches Buddhist philosophy and meditation within the FPMT network, and also teaches Cultivating Emotional Balance. She is passionate about social justice and interfaith work in addition to her Buddhist practice, and has been teaching in prisons for the last 13 years. She resides at Land of Medicine Buddha.
