The Foundation Service Seminar is one of the service seminars provided by Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition (FPMT) International Office. FPMT service seminars provide support and training to those offering service, and those wishing to offer service, within FPMT centers, services, and projects. The seminars help develop a shared understanding of the FPMT mission set out by Lama Thubten Yeshe and Lama Zopa Rinpoche, and a firm basis to serve effectively and joyfully within the organization.
While fulfilling our larger purpose to benefit sentient beings, FPMT is also a family of Dharma practitioners. Lama Thubten Yeshe used to refer to the importance of cultivating a “family feeling” within FPMT. Participating in these seminars also provides a great opportunity to emphasize our connections to each other, and how to keep those connections harmonious.
Foundation Service Seminar
The FSS runs from the evening of Feb. 2nd until 5pm on Feb. 7, 2017.
The Foundation Service Seminar (FSS) explores how best to offer our skills and qualities in service. We investigate the purpose and mission of FPMT and how that vision translates into action for centres, study groups, projects and individuals.
For anyone serving as a director, co-ordinator, SPC, board member, staff, or volunteer the FSS is a great opportunity to connect with the FPMT family and be inspired by the vast vision of our teachers. Older students and volunteers who have participated in the FSS have felt re-energized by it. The FSS is an opportunity to experience Lama Yeshe’s “family feeling” and to prepare the next generation of directors, SPCs, board members, staff and volunteers.
During these 5 days we explore our relationship to resources–both material and human; communication skills and conflict resolution; teaching according to the level of the student; ways to maintain and develop our personal practice in the midst of service, and methods to prevent and cure burnout. We discuss service in terms of guru devotion, karma, compassion, and emptiness, learning how to draw strength, inspiration, wisdom, and guidance from these practices. We learn how to use the Inner Job Description, a tool for developing what Lama Zopa calls the “inner professional” for integrating the Dharma into our daily lives. The seminar includes group discussion and sharing of experiences, and is ‘retreat-like’, including daily meditations as well as group practice as advised by Lama Zopa Rinpoche.
I attended this seminar starving for guidance and have not been disappointed. I have been fully fed and watered and leave happy, satisfied and totally inspired!
