Eight Mahayana Precepts for Lha Bab Du Chen

Nov 2, pre-dawn

Venerable Steve Carlier will lead the taking of the Eight Mahayana Precepts, a set of one-day vows to make merit on the occasion of Lha Bab Du Chen, the anniversary of the Buddha’s return from teaching his mother in Tushita heaven.

Lama Zopa Rinpoche is especially advising us to take the precepts to prevent harm from earthquakes, not only in California but in the world, and:

to free sentient beings from the oceans of samsaric sufferings, the numberless sentient beings from each realm and bring to full enlightenment, therefore you need to achieve enlightenment, therefore need to collect extensive merits to have realization on the path to enlightenment.

If you find it difficult to come to Land of Medicine Buddha in the morning, you can take the precepts in your own house, from your altar. Here are some links to help you with the background and the ceremony:

Here are the precepts that you would be keeping for 24 hours:

From now on I shall not kill,
Steal others’ possessions,
Engage in sexual activity,
Or speak false words.
I shall avoid intoxicants,
From which many mistakes arise.
I shall not sit on large, high, or expensive beds.
I shall not eat food at the wrong times.
I shall avoid singing, dancing, and playing music,
And I shall not wear perfumes, garlands, or ornaments.
