DB7: Refuge in the Three Jewels

Tuesdays, July 30 - Aug 27

Taking refuge means depending on something to keep us safe and happy. There are so many ordinary things that we take refuge in – money, social connections, health routines, property insurance – but they are not reliable; they don’t always work. The Buddha gave us an alternative – taking refuge in the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha. This is what makes a person a Buddhist.

Find out what it means to take refuge in the Three Jewels and the essential practices of refuge. Learn about the advantage of taking lay vows and how to do the Refuge preliminary practice (ngöndro) as a retreat or a daily practice.

This is module #7 of the Discovering Buddhism program. It’s fine to jump in at the beginning of any of these courses.

Topics covered in this course include:

  • The Meaning of Refuge
  • Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha Jewels
  • Refuge Ngondro (preliminary practice)
  • Refuge Vows
