DB6: All About Karma

His Holiness the Dalai Lama opened the U.S. Senate on March 6, 2014, with this verse:

“With our thoughts we make our world.
Our mind is central, and precedes our deeds.
Speak or act with a pure mind
and happiness will follow you, like a shadow that never leaves.”

This course will look into how we create the causes for our experiences through our mind, by way of karma. The process of karma can be thought of as psychological cause and effect. We will look into the Buddhist view of why anything happens in our life, working our way up to learning to work with karma to get the results we want. This is a fun module with activities that involve practicing with your own actions.

Don’t worry about the course number. (This happens to be DB course #6, but we’re not offering them in order.) You can join in on Discovering Buddhism at the beginning of any module.

Topics:

The major topics covered in All About Karma will be

  • Why Things Happen
  • The Mechanics of Karma
  • How Bad Karma Gets Created
  • Purifying Bad Karma
  • Creating the Causes for Favorable Results

Format:

The way Venerable Drimay leads these classes, there will be some short meditations throughout the evening and a break about half-way through.

There will be reading homework. The reading assignments will be provided to you, free of charge, in digital form, i.e., as a PDF which you can either read on your tablet or computer or print out.

Each module includes an experiential element in the form of a Saturday practice day or a weekend retreat. This is required in order to get your completion certificate for the course.
