An Experiential Course

with Jon Landaw

On many occasions Shakyamuni Buddha emphasized the necessity of developing the four highly beneficial attitudes of loving-kindness, compassion, empathetic joy and equanimity for those wishing to lead a truly fulfilling and meaningful life.

These four play an important role in Theravada Buddhism where they are known as the Four Sublime Attitudes. And in Mahayana Buddhism they are cultivated as the indispensable causes for developing the altruistic motivation (Bodhicitta) with which selfless Bodhisattvas strive for Full Enlightenment in order to be of maximum benefit to others.

This course is special designed to be as practical and experiential as possible and is suitable for everyone, both newcomers and more experienced students alike. During it we shall learn how certain habitual attitudes of ours keep us trapped in dissatisfaction and unhappiness, and how we can turn these destructive attitudes inside out by patient cultivation of the Four Immeasurables. And because even seasoned meditators spend much more time and energy dealing with the challenges and opportunities of their day-to-day life than they do engaged in meditation, the emphasis in this course will be on how we can bring these beneficial attitudes into our everyday life.

Methods discussed and practiced in one session will be reinforced by practical exercises to be done during the week between that session and the next. Therefore, although it is not a mandatory requirement that those wishing to attend this course come to all five sessions, it is very highly recommended that they do so.
