This ‘awakening mind’ or bodhicitta (pronounced bo-dhee-chee-ta) is the special attitude of a bodhisattva. Here’s what Lama Zopa Rinpoche says:
Everything we do in our daily life is for happiness, whether our own happiness or the happiness of others. Even though there are so many prayers to recite and so many different meditation practices, the very heart of the teaching of our kind compassionate Guru Shakyamuni Buddha is the loving, compassionate thought of bodhicitta. Bodhicitta, the altruistic thought to achieve enlightenment for the sake of other sentient beings, is the best medicine, the best meditation, the best Dharma practice.
The Benefits of the Awakening Mind is the first chapter of the famous work by Shantideva, Bodhicarya-avatara, published in English as The Way of the Bodhisattva and as A Guide to the Bodhisattva’s Way of Life.
