His Holiness Dalai Lama’s Birthday

***This practice will be held via Zoom, a link with access to the materials will be emailed to you upon registration***

About the Practice

This sadhana was composed by His Holiness the Dalai Lama when he was nineteen years old. Beautiful visualizations and text inspire the development of compassion and wisdom conjoined with Guru yoga— seeking blessings and inspiration from our spiritual guides. Arya Avalokiteshvara is known as Chenrezig in Tibet.

Reliance on the guru has been praised numerous times in many sutras and tantras as the root of all blessings and attainments. Although one can think that the guru is of one essence with any deity in whom one has faith, as it is said that love, compassion, and the precious mind of bodhichitta are like the sole life-essence of the Mahayana path and that great compassion is of the utmost importance at the beginning, middle, and end, yogis who wish to engage in the prac-tice of the yoga of unifying one’s own root guru and the supreme deity of compassion—Arya Avalokiteshvara (Chenrezig in Tibet)—should gather offerings and other ritual articles at a pleasant location. Sit on a comfortable seat and then, from the state of a special virtuous mind, first engage in the meditations of refuge, bodhichitta, and the four immeasurables.

About Geshe Thubten Sherab

“I was born in 1967 in a very small village in the western part of Nepal. Because my parents had five sons, they wanted at least one to join the monastery; it is an honor and a way of accumulating merit for the family.

I had the opportunity to meet and receive teachings from extremely great Lamas and Geshes like Lama Yeshe and Lama Zopa Rinpoche, Lama Lhundrup, Lama Konchog, Geshe Gyatso and Geshe Doga, while studying in Kopan monastery. My main root gurus are H.H. Dalai Lama, Gaden Tri Rinpoche, Losang Tenzin, H.E. Khensur Rinpoche Losang Tsering, H.E. Khensur Rinpoche Losang Delek, and Lama Zopa Rinpoche. I have great respect for them; they were role models for me and inspired me to study. I also had many gurus from whom I received initiations, oral transmissions and teachings. Some of them are: The late Dulkhu Khentse Rinpoche, Denma Lochoe Rinpoche, Choden Rinpoche, H.E. Khensur Ugen Tseten, Panang Rinpoche, and H. Holiness Sakya Trisur Rinpoche.

I studied in Sera Je Monastery for the Geshe degree from 1987 to 2000. What has influenced me greatly, during that time and since, has been spending time around my teachers and observing how they practice, how they engage in their daily lives. After I completed my Geshe studies, I went to Gyume Tantric College for a year and then I was sent to the United States to help at FPMT’s International Office, as well as teach at the centers in Taos and Santa Fe, New Mexico.
