Course Description

Form is empty. Emptiness is form.
Emptiness is not other than form; form is also not other than emptiness.
In the same way, feeling, discrimination, compositional factors, and consciousness are empty.

Wisdom and compassion are the two wings that we need to fly to enlightenment. In the Heart Sutra, we hear Avalokiteshvara, the embodiment of compassion, teaching about the wisdom of emptiness. If we try to figure out the meaning of this sutra without an explanation, we might fall into the extreme of thinking that nothing exists. That is not what the Heart Sutra means. Things don’t exist the way we think they do, but they still exist.
Join us in this weekend program, where we will hear an explanation of the Heart Sutra (Tib. Sherab Nyingpo) one of the concise sutras in the Perfection of Wisdom genre of Buddhist literature. Traditional commentary expands on the cryptic style of the sutra to clarify the exact nature of the wisdom realizing emptiness and the ‘method’ practices that are its essential complement, relating these two aspects of practice to the five levels on the path to enlightenment. Learn the implied meaning behind the words and how to meditate on emptiness.
This counts as a module of the FPMT Basic Program.
