Land of Medicine Buddha provides classes and space for group and personal retreats, on a forested piece of property at the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains, just a mile and a half from Soquel Village, California. We are an active Buddhist community. Through teaching, meditation, prayer, retreat and community service, we engage in preserving and transmitting the Mahayana Buddhist tradition and values, specifically in the lineage of Lama Tsongkhapa. Stupa Project
We are building a replica of the Mahabodhi Stupa - the monument marking the site where Shakyamuni Buddha manifested enlightenment under the Bodhi Tree at Bodhgaya, India. Apply for Service-Study
We are accepting applications for service-study residency. Service-study participants generally contribute their time to the following departments at the center: Kitchen, Housekeeping, Event set-up/breakdown, Grounds/Gardening, Maintenance, Altar care. Service-study participants contribute 25 hours per week, generally broken up into five 5-hour days. Find out more and apply

Don't get stuck on the wrong side of the gate. If you are an overnight guest, be sure to keep the gate code with you. Land of Medicine Buddha is looking for an OUTSTANDING Grounds/Maintenance professional to start immediately!

This is a full-time, non-residential position.

The position includes a variety of assignments:

  • Caring for the land, trails, and pathways with an eye for detail and beauty. The Land and gardens are offerings to the Buddhas and a pleasure for our guests, we are seeking someone who wishes to take ownership of this very important aspect of our Center.
  • Garbage, recycling, and compost maintenance: an often undervalued, but highly necessary part of the running of a public facility.
  • Routine maintenance and upkeep tasks for the entire retreat facility.

Requirements for the position:

  • Above all else, LMB exists to serve sentient beings both as a Dharma Center and a Retreat Facility, a positive attitude of service is a must.
  • Ability to prioritize the workflow and work independently.
  • A “can do” attitude that extends to other staff members, as well as our guests.
  • A strong body — this is a highly physical position and requires heavy lifting and rigorous physical activity.
